Aellia: naming the invisible

When several companies became one, a technical leader in emission monitoring needed more than a merged org chart — it needed a name and a brand equal to its ambition. We renamed The Sniffers as Aellia, and built the identity behind it.

When several companies became one, a technical leader in emission monitoring needed more than a merged org chart — it needed a name and a brand equal to its ambition. We renamed The Sniffers as Aellia, and built the identity behind it.

At a glance

  • Positioning — from leak detection to environmental & industrial intelligence, across every audience and market
  • Naming — a name that means air, carries a mythological resonance, and was cleared for trademark across Europe
  • Visual identity — one system that scales from the report to the refinery

The specialists of invisible emissions

Aellia — formerly The Sniffers — is a leader in industrial emission monitoring: detecting, measuring and certifying the gases and emissions that escape from pipelines, refineries and heavy industry.

It is specialist, technical work that most people never see: the sensors and inspectors that find methane and volatile emissions before they become a hazard, a fine, or a climate cost. Decades of expertise, market-leading laboratory certifications, and a hand in shaping the standards of the industry — all of it carried by a name that sounded more like a nickname than a reference.

The starting point: the legacy brand and its analysis
The starting point — a sensory, unconventional brand with deep technical expertise, but a name that undersold the company it had become.

The challenge: several companies, one ambition — and no name to carry it

Several entities had come together into a single, larger business with international reach. The merged company had the expertise and the market position, but not the brand: the existing names were descriptive and a little blunt, anchored in a leak-detection past rather than an environmental-intelligence future.

The brief: define the positioning of the merged company, then find — and secure — a name and identity able to carry it across Europe and across every audience, from heavy-industry clients to public authorities and regulators.

The positioning: from leak detection to environmental & industrial intelligence

We reframed the category. Aellia isn't just a leak-detection service — it's the specialist of emission monitoring and measurement, turning emission data into environmental and industrial intelligence. Detection and monitoring, measurement and analysis, certification and validation: one end-to-end authority on the invisible.

We anchored the brand in the three worlds it has to speak to at once — the atmosphere (the invisible, gaseous domain it measures), industry (the heavy infrastructure it serves) and the environment (the impact and regulation it answers to).

Aellia brand territory: Atmosphere (invisible domain), Industry (physical infrastructure), Environment (impact and regulation)
The brand territory — light and fluid (air), heavy and static (industry), long-term (environment): the tension the identity had to hold together.
Aellia differentiators: omni/all, reference and authority, unconventional leader
The differentiators — the most exhaustive offer in the field, unquestionable authority, and an unconventional leader unafraid to challenge the standards it helped write.

The name: air, myth, and a woman's name in a world of men

The name had to do a lot of work at once. We ran a broad naming exploration, then narrowed it against a strict set of criteria — meaning, sound, and, crucially, legal availability.

A large grid of candidate names explored, with Aellia selected
Dozens of routes explored and pressure-tested — for sense, sound and ownability — before one name held.

Aellia. The choice carries three ideas in five letters:

  • Air — the opening “ae” of aer / aero, the invisible medium Aellia works in, built right into the name.
  • Myth — a feminine, almost mythological name, echoing Aello, the Greek spirit of the storm-wind: lightness and a human face in a heavy, male-dominated industrial world.
  • Ownable — we ran a trademark-availability search across Europe before locking it, so the name was clear to own and to build on from day one.
A name light enough to mean air, and strong enough to lead an industry that measures it.

The identity: bubbles that rise, columns that stand

The symbol makes the invisible visible. A field of dots rises like gas bubbles — the methane and emissions Aellia detects and measures — while the same marks resolve into upright, column-like bars: a nod to the classical, mythological root of the name and to the authority Aellia holds in its field. Light and fluid meets solid and certain.

The Aellia symbol: rising dots resolving into vertical column-like bars
The mark — rising bubbles on one side, standing columns on the other. Emissions made visible; authority made tangible.

A deep, confident blue grounds the brand, with a teal-to-green gradient that signals air, clean-tech and the environmental promise at its core.

The Aellia wordmark — the particle motif carried into the letters, on a deep industrial blue.

The brand in the world: one system, from the report to the refinery

The identity was built to travel — across business lines (advisory, emission management, pipeline management), documents, signage and the field. The dot-and-column motif becomes an atmospheric data pattern; the photography pairs precise, human portraits of the people who do the work with the heavy industrial environments they work in.

Aellia brand environment: a wall of rising dots with the Aellia logo
The brand in its environment — the particle motif scaled up into an atmospheric data wall.
Aellia applications: brochures for Advisory, Emission Management and Pipeline Management
Business-line applications — one brand system, flexed across advisory, emission management and pipeline management.
Aellia brand photography: portraits of field workers in industrial settings
The people behind the science — the human face the name was chosen to bring to the industry.

The result: a merged company with one clear name, one ownable story, and an identity that turns invisible emissions — and the expertise that measures them — into a brand with authority and warmth.
