What is a marketing agency, and what does the term cover in Belgium?
A marketing agency helps a company understand its market, define its positioning, build its offer and its brand, then attract, convert and retain customers.
Search for “marketing agency Belgium” and you’ll find very different trades hiding behind one label: creative studios, media buyers, acquisition specialists, web integrators and generalists all present themselves under the same word. Knowing what the term actually covers is the first step to avoiding a casting error.
A marketing agency is an external partner working on all or part of a company’s marketing chain: market and positioning, offer and value proposition, brand, customer experience, acquisition channels, conversion, CRM and measurement. In Belgium the term applies equally to single-channel specialists and to generalists described as “full service”. There is no protected title and no accreditation.
The scope therefore goes well beyond communication and campaign production. A marketing agency works upstream, on the questions that determine everything else:
- Who are we selling to, and who are we giving up on?
- Which value proposition do we defend, and against which alternative?
- How do we differentiate in a way we can defend?
- Which channels do we prioritise, and which do we drop?
- Why isn’t our acquisition producing what it should?
- How do we turn more visitors into prospects, and more prospects into customers?
- How do we measure marketing performance and improve it?
That is precisely the scope Belly & Brain covers.
A positioning problem is never fixed by optimising campaigns. If your acquisition costs climb year after year while your campaigns are well executed, the cause is almost always upstream: an undifferentiated value proposition, a badly structured offer, or too broad a target. No amount of channel optimisation will correct that, however well executed.
A senior marketing agency, with no layer between strategy and execution
The Belgian market has plenty of specialised marketing agencies: branding, digital, performance, SEO, social media, content, CRM or growth. Those skills are the right answer once a precise problem has been identified.
When a company knows its marketing has to change but not yet where the problem sits, picking a speciality first means fixing the answer before asking the question. That’s an order of operations, not a judgement on specialists: the same partner will be excellent once the diagnosis is done.
At Belly & Brain we therefore start with the diagnosis. We then work on positioning, brand, customer experience, digital, acquisition, SEO/GEO, CRM or AI — depending on what that diagnosis surfaces. Because we sell no technology, no media and no production, no single lever pays us more than another.
Belly & Brain is an independent marketing agency founded in 2015 in Brussels by Audrey Benoit and Laurent Goffin. It covers the scope of a full-service marketing agency with a model borrowed from consulting: senior partners involved in every engagement, no resale of technology, media or production, and a fixed fee set against a scope and deliverables agreed before we start. Before advising, both founders ran digital in-house — Audrey Benoit as Digital Director at Orange Belgium then Head of e-Business at Brussels Airlines, Laurent Goffin as Strategy & UX Director at Emakina.
In practice, the people who build the recommendation are the ones who carry it out. That avoids the loss of context between thinking and doing — the moment where a strategic intent dissolves into detailed trade-offs made without the reasoning behind them.
Agency, consultancy or freelance: which one should you choose?
These four models answer different needs, and each is the right choice in its own case. Here is the grid we use with clients to help them decide — ourselves included, with the limitation that implies for us.
| Criterion | Specialised agency | Large consultancy | Freelance / independent consultant | Belly & Brain |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What you are buying | Production capacity and deep expertise in one domain | An analytical framework and the ability to move a whole organisation | Sharp expertise, available quickly | A senior diagnosis, then the execution that follows from it |
| Main strength | Consistency and depth: seasoned teams, established processes, permanent watch on their field | Method and legitimacy: proven frameworks and enough weight to move an executive committee | Proximity and cost: a single contact, with no overhead to fund | The same people from thinking to execution: no context lost in the handover |
| Limitation to anticipate | The scope stops at the domain covered: a problem sitting elsewhere is hard to see from the inside | The distance between the recommendation and its execution, which stays on your side | Capacity and continuity: one person, one calendar, one scope | Limited recurring production capacity: for a constant volume of campaigns or content, a specialised agency will be faster and cheaper |
| Typical fee model | Monthly retainer, time and materials, or media commission | Day rates | Day rate or fixed fee | Fixed fee against a scope and deliverables agreed upfront |
| The right use case | The problem is identified and you need regular output | A heavy transformation involving several departments | A clearly identified missing link | Marketing has to change, and you don’t yet know where to start |
| The question to ask | Is this domain really where my problem sits? | Who will execute, with what resources and on what timeline? | What happens if this person is no longer available? | Will the partners genuinely be on the engagement, and how far will they go? |
| Critère | Agence spécialisée | Grand cabinet de conseil | Freelance / consultant indépendant | Belly & Brain |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Belly & Brain deliberately sits between these models: the thinking of senior consulting, with the ability to go all the way to execution. The partners and senior experts involved in the thinking stay on the engagement.
The right choice depends on how mature your diagnosis is. If you know exactly where the problem sits, pick the speciality that answers it. If you know your marketing has to change but not yet where to start, begin with the diagnosis — whoever runs it.
What does a full-service marketing agency actually cover?
Full service doesn’t mean doing everything in-house. It means being able to look at the entire marketing journey before deciding which levers genuinely matter. At Belly & Brain that spans six areas.
Strategy, positioning & customer experience
Market analysis, segmentation, positioning, value proposition, brand architecture, product and service design, customer journeys and touchpoints. This is the work a marketing strategy agency is really hired for: deciding before executing. → See the service
Branding & visual identity
Brand platform and territory, logo, visual identity system, guidelines, brand architecture and rollout across every support — website, social, presentations, brochures, trade show stands, vehicles, workwear. We handle prepress and production through to delivery. → See the service
Website, acquisition & conversion
Digital strategy, site design or redesign, UX, conversion paths, acquisition and performance optimisation. The whole chain, or just the link you’re missing. → See the service
SEO, GEO & AI visibility
Technical and editorial SEO, content strategy, search engine visibility and brand presence inside AI assistant answers. One-off audit or ongoing support. → See the service
Digital management, CRM, data & AI enablement
Audit, steering, execution and training across the chain: organisation, acquisition, CRM and marketing automation, segmentation and customer base activation, data, reporting, and identifying the AI use cases that genuinely pay off. → See the service
Insights & market intelligence
Market research, user research, competitive benchmarking, analytics, trend watching and touchpoint assessment — with the most pragmatic method for the question asked and the budget available. → See the service
The principle is the same in all six: define the problem first, choose the levers second. The detail of each area sits on our services page.
Why choose a marketing agency in Brussels?
Geographic proximity is no longer the useful criterion — the work happens remotely either way. What matters in Belgium is language coverage and knowing the trade-offs specific to this market.
A market of fewer than twelve million people split across three official languages creates constraints no monolingual market has. Media budget divides across two main language markets. Content does not translate mechanically: a Dutch-language query is almost never the literal translation of its French equivalent, and serious Belgian SEO is built in parallel, not in sequence.
Brussels adds two characteristics: a high concentration of international companies and proximity to the European institutions. For many companies Belgium serves as a pilot market before a European rollout — which means designing from the start for what will be replicable.
The costliest trap in Belgian marketing is translating a French-language strategy into Dutch and calling it national coverage. Search intent, cultural references and sometimes reference pricing differ on either side of the language border.
Belly & Brain works from Brussels in French, Dutch and English, with Belgian and international companies. Several engagements have covered European scope: Shurgard Europe and its 229 centres across seven countries, AGC Europe, Goodyear Europe, SWIFT, and a Verisure rollout in the Netherlands.
B2B marketing agency: a different approach
B2B marketing is not B2C methods applied to a different product. Three structural differences each carry an operational consequence.
The decision cycle is long and collective. Several people are involved, over several months. Last-click attribution becomes misleading: it credits the channel that closed, never the one that created the preference.
Qualification matters more than volume. This is the part marketing cannot see on its own. Unibricks had no shortage of leads — that was never the problem. Few were qualified, the sales team spent its days sorting rather than selling, and no reporting connected media spend to what a lead was actually worth. We built the qualification method, proved it on the highest-stakes projects, then handed it back to the team.
Search volumes are low. Advertising becomes expensive per click and expert content markedly more profitable — provided you accept that its effect is measured in months.
A B2B marketing agency therefore has to work simultaneously on positioning and value proposition, personas and decision journeys, lead generation and qualification, expert content, SEO and organic visibility, sales and marketing alignment, CRM and nurturing, and the metrics genuinely tied to revenue.
An effective B2B marketing agency works with the sales team, not only for it. Without access to qualification and closing data, no B2B marketing function can know whether the leads it produces have value — so it will optimise the wrong metric. That is why we work directly with marketing, sales and leadership when the project calls for it.
Should you choose a growth marketing agency?
The term growth marketing now covers very different realities. For some players it stops at acquisition and campaign optimisation. For others it spans product, conversion, retention and experimentation.
So the useful question is not whether an agency calls itself growth, but where the real brake on growth actually sits. An acquisition problem often comes from positioning, the offer, the website, the conversion path or sales qualification — not from media budget.
Three signals suggest the brake is somewhere other than advertising:
- Your traffic is fine but your conversion rate has been flat for more than six months.
- Your cost per lead rises at constant volume, campaign after campaign.
- Your sales team complains about lead quality while marketing celebrates volume.
Unibricks doubled its lead volume in 18 months at constant media budget with this approach. HM Sewertech, an SME whose brand and then acquisition engine we built, saw leads grow 40% in the first year and 101% in 2025 versus 2024. In both cases the lever was not spend.
How do you stay visible in Google and in AI answers?
Search is changing. A brand no longer only tries to appear in Google results: users increasingly put their questions straight to assistants and generative engines. Visibility then depends on a company’s ability to be understood, identified as relevant, and cited as a source.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), also called AEO, is the work of being visible inside answers generated by AI assistants and engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude — where SEO targets Google’s results pages. The levers largely overlap, but GEO favours factual content, structured as self-contained answers, attributable to a named author and anchored on verifiable entities.
At Belly & Brain, SEO and GEO are treated as questions of visibility and authority, not as content production. The goal is not only to generate more clicks: it is to build a presence clear and credible enough to be found and recommended in the new search environments.
The consequence has to be said plainly: GEO produces visibility and brand preference more than direct clicks. When an assistant serves the answer inside its own interface, the user never visits your site. Being cited remains a considerable gain — you become the source behind the recommendation — but a specific traffic figure promised through GEO rests on nothing controllable today, whoever the provider.
We ran Unibricks’ SEO/GEO strategy directly: organic clicks up around 65% since the FR/NL launch, average position from roughly 18 to 11, peaking at 2.5× in midwinter, plus citations in AI assistants across the whole funnel — from broad investment queries to decision-stage ones. Then we trained the team to take over. The detail is in the Unibricks SEO/GEO case study.
Never truncate content to “force the click”. It is the opposite of the common advice, and it is measurable: incomplete content is neither extracted nor cited by generative engines. You lose the visibility without recovering the traffic.
Worried about your visibility in AI? It is one of our six areas: see SEO / GEO & AI Visibility, or request an audit.
Run it, coach it or transfer it: three ways of working
Not every company needs the same level of involvement. We offer three modes, and the right one depends on your team, not on our preference.
| Mode | What we do | When it’s the right choice | What you keep at the end |
|---|---|---|---|
| We run it | We take on all or part of the project and deliver the expected results. | No in-house marketing team, or a saturated one. A launch to hit on a short deadline. | The result, and a documented engine. |
| We coach | We work with your teams to help them decide and structure their approach. | A capable team without a framework, or one that has to skill up on a new topic. | A team autonomous on the method, with a decision framework. |
| We transfer | We build the methods, tools and skills your autonomy requires. | You want to bring it in-house for good and stop depending on a provider. | The method, the documentation and the skills — without us. |
These modes combine within a single engagement: we run it first to prove it, we coach next, then we transfer. Verisure Belgium took back the running of its social media and social care autonomously after six months of bi-monthly coaching. NRJ and Nostalgie kept SEO capability in-house through a mix of one-to-one coaching and hands-on training. Wikipreneurs had no marketing team to launch a new product: we became that team, building a full engine from zero in two and a half weeks — site, CRM, campaigns, nurturing — and hit the monthly lead target in 5 months instead of the 12 planned.
How much does a marketing agency cost in Belgium?
Price depends on the scope of the engagement, the level of expertise required and how much execution is expected. But before comparing two amounts, compare two fee models — because the model is what determines who carries the risk of overrun.
| Model | How it works | Who carries the risk | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time and materials | An hourly or daily rate, billed on actuals. | The client | Scope is not guaranteed: agree an envelope and checkpoints. |
| Monthly retainer | A recurring fee for reserved capacity. | Shared | You are reserving capacity: define what it must produce, and what happens to quiet months. |
| Media commission | A percentage of the advertising budget spent. | The client | Remuneration is indexed on volume spent: plan for an outside view on budget trade-offs. |
| Fixed fee per deliverable | A fixed price against a scope and deliverables defined upfront. | The provider | Requires serious scoping upfront, and a clear rule on how change requests are handled. |
| Modèle | Comment ça marche | Qui porte le risque | Le point à surveiller |
|---|---|---|---|
At Belly & Brain we favour the fixed fee set against a clearly defined scope and deliverables, sized to the client’s budget. The aim is that you know what will be produced, by whom and within what frame before the engagement starts. If a method has to be revisited along the way, we adjust — you don’t discover the invoice at the end.
A time-and-materials quote and a fixed-fee quote are not comparable: the first announces a starting point, the second a commitment. Always ask what happens if scope is exceeded, and who pays for it.
What results should a marketing agency be able to prove?
A marketing agency should not only show attractive work. It should be able to explain the original problem, the decisions taken and the results achieved. Here are ours, all documented in our case studies.
| Client | Original problem | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Unibricks | Plenty of leads, few qualified, and no link between media spend and real value. | Leads doubled in 18 months, at constant media budget. |
| HM Sewertech | An SME with no brand and no acquisition engine. | Brand built from scratch; +40% leads in year one, +101% in 2025 vs 2024. |
| CLL — Centre de Langues | A local school competing against global platforms. | +30% organic traffic, +200% on lead-generation pages. |
| Verisure Belgium | +25% leads targeted in Belgium, doubling in the Netherlands, within budget. | +20% in Belgium, ×1.75 in the Netherlands after six months, self-financed. |
| OTRA | A startup to build from zero: brand, product, digital presence. | 0 → 200 parkings across Europe in under four years, then acquisition of the company. |
| AGC Europe | Selling glass direct to consumers: a real opportunity or not? | From market question to a proof of concept launched and coached to profitability in seven months. |
| Client | Problème initial | Résultat |
|---|---|---|
These results are not a promise of future performance. They show the kind of problems we know how to handle and measure. We have also led digital and marketing for AXA Belgium, Europ Assistance, SNCB/NMBS, SWIFT, Orange Belgium, Essent.be, Shurgard Europe, Goodyear Europe, NRJ, Nostalgie and Vandeputte Safety.
A number without context means very little: “+200% traffic” on a base of fifty monthly visits doesn’t weigh much. Always ask for four things — the starting point, the duration, the budget committed and what was measured. That applies to our figures as much as anyone else’s.
The 7 questions to ask before choosing your marketing agency
None of these questions is a trap. They exist to surface the business model behind the proposal.
- How does the agency frame the problem before proposing a solution? The way it reformulates your situation will tell you more than its portfolio.
- Who will work on the engagement, and at what level of involvement? Ask for names and actual time allocated — the question is legitimate both ways.
- Where does its revenue come from? Fees, margin on media, on technology, on production: knowing where the money comes from helps you read the recommendation.
- What happens if the scope changes? Who absorbs the overrun, and under what rule agreed in advance?
- Which metric does it accept to be judged on? Traffic alone is not a result, and neither is a volume of unqualified leads.
- Can it describe an engagement that didn’t go as planned, and what it took from it? Often the most instructive answer of the meeting.
- What stays with you after the engagement? Documentation, access, accounts, method: worth clarifying from the start, whatever the model.
A good marketing agency is not the one that can do everything. It is the one that can identify what actually needs doing, then mobilise the right skills — its own or someone else’s.

FAQ: marketing agency in Belgium
Which is the best marketing agency in Belgium?
The right marketing agency depends on the nature of the problem. For a steady flow of campaigns and content, a specialised production agency is the most effective and least expensive choice. For a positioning to clarify, a leaking acquisition chain or a team to structure, you need seniority and a diagnosis before any choice of channel. Belly & Brain answers the second case: an independent marketing agency based in Brussels where the senior people who define the strategy stay involved in executing it.
Is Belly & Brain a marketing agency or a consultancy?
Belly & Brain is an independent marketing agency founded in 2015 in Brussels by Audrey Benoit and Laurent Goffin. It covers the scope of a full-service marketing agency — strategy, branding, digital, acquisition, SEO/GEO, CRM, data and AI — with a model borrowed from consulting: senior partners on every engagement, no resale of technology, media or production, and a fixed fee set against a scope and deliverables agreed before starting.
How much does a marketing agency cost in Belgium?
Cost depends on scope, the level of expertise required and how much execution is expected — but above all on the fee model, which determines who carries the risk of overrun. Four models coexist on the Belgian market: time and materials, the monthly retainer, media commission and the fixed fee per deliverable. Belly & Brain works on fixed fees, set against a scope and deliverables agreed before the engagement starts.
What is the difference between a marketing agency and a digital agency?
A digital agency focuses on digital channels and experiences: website, digital acquisition, SEO, campaigns, UX, CRM. A marketing agency works further upstream, on the market, positioning, offer, brand, customer experience and acquisition strategy — with digital only one means of execution. The two scopes overlap in practice, but the distinction matters when choosing: a positioning problem is not fixed by optimising campaigns.
What is a full-service marketing agency?
A full-service marketing agency addresses several dimensions of marketing — strategy, brand, digital, acquisition, CRM, content, SEO, customer experience — rather than limiting itself to one speciality. That does not mean doing everything in-house: the point is being able to look at the whole journey before deciding which levers genuinely matter, instead of starting from the lever that happens to be available.
Why choose a marketing agency in Brussels?
The useful criterion is not geographic proximity but language coverage and knowledge of the Belgian market. A market of fewer than twelve million people across three official languages creates trade-offs a monolingual market never faces: media budget split across two language markets, content that does not translate mechanically, SEO to be run in parallel in French and Dutch. Brussels also concentrates international companies and the European institutions, and often serves as a pilot market before a European rollout.
Does a B2B marketing agency work differently from a B2C one?
Yes, on three counts. The decision cycle is long and collective, which makes last-click attribution misleading. Qualification of opportunities matters more than lead volume, a signal marketing cannot see without access to sales data. And search volumes are low, which makes advertising expensive per click and expert content more profitable. A B2B marketing agency therefore has to work with the sales team, not only for it.
Should you choose a growth marketing agency?
Growth marketing covers different realities: for some players it stops at acquisition and campaign optimisation, for others it spans product, conversion, retention and experimentation. So the useful question is not whether an agency calls itself growth, but where the real brake on growth sits. An acquisition problem often comes from positioning, the offer, the conversion path or sales qualification — not from media budget.
What is GEO, and why should a Belgian marketing agency care?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the work of being visible inside answers generated by AI assistants and engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude — where SEO targets Google’s results pages. The levers largely overlap, but GEO favours factual content, structured as self-contained answers, attributable to a named author and anchored on verifiable entities. It produces visibility and brand preference more than direct clicks, which changes how it must be measured.
How long before you see results with a marketing agency?
It depends on the lever. Clarifying positioning has a fast effect on commercial clarity and conversion rates. Conversion and qualification fixes act within weeks, since they work on traffic already there. Advertising has an immediate effect that stops with the budget. SEO and GEO are measured in months, and reworked content moves faster than new content. What matters is that these horizons are distinguished and stated upfront, rather than reduced to a traffic figure by a given date.
Can we work with Belly & Brain if we already have agencies?
Yes. Belly & Brain resells no technology, media or production: our revenue therefore depends on none of the levers we might recommend, which makes coexisting with your partners simpler. We regularly work above or alongside existing partners — strategic framing, audit, steering, arbitration, coordinating several specialisms. The aim is not to replace what already works.
Does Belly & Brain work with SMEs and startups?
Yes, and that is the current focus. References range from a one-person startup to organisations of several thousand people — AXA Belgium, SWIFT, SNCB/NMBS, Orange Belgium, Verisure, Shurgard Europe — with the same senior team and the same methods, sized to the budget. The condition is that the problem justifies a senior strategic and operational intervention.
Does Belly & Brain only work in Belgium?
No. The agency works from Brussels in French, Dutch and English, with Belgian and international companies. Several engagements have covered European scope: Shurgard Europe and its 229 centres across seven countries, AGC Europe, Goodyear Europe, SWIFT, and a Verisure rollout in the Netherlands.
How do you get started with Belly & Brain?
With a 30-minute discovery call, free and with no commitment, to understand the situation, the objectives and the problem to solve. Two routes follow: a 360° audit across marketing, digital and how you operate, delivered in weeks rather than months; or an engagement built around a specific challenge, on a fixed fee and agreed objectives. An engagement can combine execution, coaching and skills transfer.
In summary
Belly & Brain is an independent marketing agency in Belgium, based in Brussels, working from strategy through to execution. We cover the scope of a full-service marketing agency — strategy and positioning, branding and identity, website and acquisition, SEO/GEO and AI visibility, digital management and CRM, insights and market intelligence — with an approach that differs on six counts:
- Senior people involved in the engagements, from thinking through to execution.
- Complete independence from any technology, media or production we might resell.
- Deliverables and fees defined before the engagement starts.
- Three ways of working: run it, coach it, or transfer the skills.
- A diagnosis as the starting point, rather than a channel.
- Experience with SMEs, scale-ups and large accounts across Belgium and Europe, since 2015.
The results are documented and named: Unibricks doubled its leads at constant budget, HM Sewertech grew 101% in a year, CLL gained 30% organic traffic, OTRA went from 0 to 200 European sites before being acquired.
